Search Models

Searching and matching is more than just typing in words and concepts to find results.  Efficient searching is part of an overall 'search strategy' that tells you what the best and fastest way is to find good results.  It is a multiple-step process of getting results, refining them, and homing in on the results that you really want.

There are two common search models in use today:  starting broad, and starting small.  "Starting broad" occurs when a user types in one or two general terms, gets many results, and slowly adds keywords and criteria to refine them into a more and more narrow result list.  "Starting small" occurs when a user begins with a very specific search and, if no results are found, gradually broadens his or her criteria until a match is located.

Actonomy has studied several different search processes in depth, and has pre-programmed search pattern that will lead to the best results in the shortest possible time.  Our intelligent technology allows you to start 'in the middle' and let the system guide you to the optimal results.  No manual refining and hoping for better results:  instead, our system calculates what variations and additional criteria will yield the best results, and even tells you how many extra results it will yield!

The use of a search model or search strategy is not only a good way to improve your results, but is also valuable in training new users who navigate your database or webpage.  Having a system that supports them in their search improves their efficiency; they no longer have to learn by trial and error which of the various search strategies works best under which conditions.  The system's built-in guidance and support is like a senior person sharing knowledge with new users!
