Vivaldis Interim

Michael Moens, Digital Strategy Manager

Belgian temporary staffing company Vivaldis Interim is happily using Actonomy’s xMP searching and matching technology. Today, it is time to have a first lookback at the results: Actonomy performed more than 700.000 queries, with a stunning 95 % recognition rate. The ultimate proof that Actonomy’s technology is outperforming all competitors on the market.

Vivaldis Interim is a specialized temporary staffing company with more than 70 offices spread all over Belgium. Like many other agencies, Vivaldis is using its website to offer jobs to jobseekers. Until two years ago, it used existing searching and matching technology from a Belgian technology company. But Vivaldis was not satisfied with the technology.

Michael Moens, digital strategy manager at Vivaldis:

“We had the feeling of lacking behind. The matching results were not meeting our expectations and the technology turned out not to be flexible enough.”

Being smart when searching and matching

So, Vivaldis Interim got in touch with Actonomy. Filip De Geijter, CEO at Actonomy: ‘We implemented our xMP searching and matching software in the newly developed website of Vivaldis Interim. Essential in our approach towards Vivaldis Interim was and is the focus on being smart when searching and matching.’ And the difference in quality turns out to be striking. Thanks to the Actonomy technology, the recognition rate has reached a staggering 95 %. The reason for this extremely good result is simple. De Geijter points at a clear example: ‘In the former system, it was not possible to find jobs for ‘technicus’ (in Dutch) when searching for ‘technieker’, although both words mean exactly the same.’ Actonomy’s technology does see the similarity between both words. Why is that? De Geyter:

“Our system has logged more than 700.000 queries performed on the Vivaldis website, representing some 1,2 million words. Hardly 5 % of the words logged were not recognized, partly because the words were not recognized by Actonomy and partly because words contained so much spelling errors or typos!”

A constant learning ontology

This difference can be explained by the fact that xMP is a learning ontology: words not recognized get labeled. By doing so, the database of recognized words and their interrelationships – the ‘ontology’ – gets bigger and bigger, and the accuracy gets higher and higher. So far, Actonomy’s xMP has logged 253 million words per year: this is a competitive advantage that is hard to beat.

Some of the problems encountered when trying to log and understand the queries done in the Vivaldis website, have to deal with typing mistakes. De Geyter gives an example: ‘heftuck driver’ (in Dutch) of course is a non-existing job, but our technology is capable of seeing through the spelling mistake: it should be ‘truck’ instead of ‘tuck’, of course.’ Just like humans, intelligent searching and matching technology is constantly learning, by making senseful relations between words, taking into account the context. Words that before were not yet known by the xMP technology, get interpreted and added to the ontology. The more queries in the Vivaldis website are analyzed, the smarter the searches become.

Needless to say, Vivaldis Interim is happy about the cooperation switch towards Actonomy. Moens:

‘Our website obviously provides better searches to candidates. The vast majority of queries done by candidates is correctly interpreted. And thanks to the learning of the systems, the results get better and better. That is good for our candidates and – ultimately – also for Vivaldis.’

  • Higher quality search results

  • Recognition rate of queries of 95%

  • Accurate matching thanks to the machine learning ontology

  • Understanding senseful relationships between words, taken into account the context
